FocalPoint Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is a secure, web-browser environment specifically designed to conduct online assessments safely. It transforms any computer into a secure testing workstation by restricting access to system functions, external websites, and unauthorized applications, ensuring integrity during assessments.

SEB runs locally on a user's computer and securely connects to the FocalPoint Assessment System via the internet.

Components

FocalPoint SEB can be deployed in two ways:

1. Kiosk Application

The SEB kiosk application locks down the computer by launching the Safe Exam Browser and optionally approved third-party applications. It directly controls various operating system functions to ensure comprehensive security during testing.

2. Browser-Based Solution

The SEB browser connects directly to the configured URL of the assessment system page. It displays no navigation elements like the address bar, search fields, or status indicators, maintaining a distraction-free and secure testing environment.

  • Windows: SEB uses Mozilla Gecko (via XULRunner) as its browser engine.
  • Mac OS: SEB utilizes Apple's WebKit engine, similar to Safari and Google Chrome.

Safe Exam Browser – Windows

SEB for Windows consists of:

  • SEB Kiosk Application: Opens a secured Windows desktop, disabling shortcuts (e.g., ALT+F4) and mouse functionalities that could compromise security.
  • XULRunner Runtime: A Mozilla-based browser engine facilitating a secure connection to the FocalPoint Assessment System without navigation bars or status indicators.

Safe Exam Browser – Mac OS

SEB for Mac OS is a unified application built on the WebKit browser framework. It securely connects to the FocalPoint Assessment System similarly to the Windows version, providing a seamless and secure testing experience.
